Junzo Kokubo...

The first Japanese acupuncturist in Toronto, Canada

 

EDUCATION

  • Tokyo College of Acupuncture, Tokyo, Japan Three-year program in Acupuncture and Western Medicine. 

  • Became a licensed practitioner of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine by passing the national examination given by the Ministry of Health of Japan. (1974) 

 

RELEVANT EXPERIENCE AND AWARDS

  • Full time, ten-year apprenticeship under the guidance of Dr.Kiyotaka Omura, a renowned acupuncturist in Japan, during which time I treated over 60,000 patients.

  • Selected as a member of the Japanese Youth Delegation to Australia of 1976, co- sponsored by the governments of Japan & Australia. The purpose of the delegation was to promote the mutual friendship and cultural exchange between the two countries. During the 3-week stay, I performed Acupuncture lectures and demonstrations in Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne and Hovart (Tasmania). 

  • Member of a 1989 Medical Mission to India which was sponsored and organized by the Tibetan Society of Europe. The purpose of the mission was to study Traditional Tibetan Medicine and provide the necessary medical attentions to Tibetan Refugees in Dahlmasara, India. Of the group of eight medical practitioners, I was the only acupuncturist who treated 15~20 patients everyday during the 3 weeks stay there. Because of this volunteer activity, I was honoured to meet and talk with His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Nobel Laureate in Peace of 1990.

  • Kokubo's Acupuncture Clinic; Immigrated to Canada in 1981, founded the current clinic as the first Japanese acupuncturist in Toronto, Ontario.

  • Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture Association of Canada Director of Educational and Cultural Department, 1986 Vice President of External Affairs, 1991.

  • Canadian Academy of Chinese Traditional Health Science A committee member since 1994.

  • AcuPro Inc.; President. Developed the PressPoint Ear Acupressure Kits for weight control, quit smoking and stress reduction. Engaged in manufacturing and marketing them worldwide since 1995.

  • Featured on Global Television Network as the first practitioner of Japanese Acupuncture in Toronto (1983), Interviewed for a comment on the government policy on the regulation of acupuncture in Ontario (CTV,1997)

  • A guest speaker at the medical department of University of Toronto; Lecture and demonstration of Japanese acupuncture and moxibustion.

  • A contracted lecturer at the Shiatsu School of Canada, Toronto, Ont.(1992)

  • Lectured and conducted workshops of acupuncture to medical professionals in Grand Canary Island, Spain.(1993)

  • Invited by a health clinic in Louisville, Kentucky to give workshops of acupuncture and Shiatsu to the medical professionals. Had an opportunity to treat a horse with acupuncture at the request of the owner, which was an amazing success! (1994)

  • Invited as an interpreter for a distinguished Japanese acupuncturist by the New England School of Acupuncture in Boston, Massachusettes,USA(1994)

  • Selected as a qualified medical practitioner for a medical research project sponsored by the Centre for Studies of Aging of the University of Toronto (1995)

  • Featured on Erin Davis Show (Roger Cable TV) and Spiritual Journy (Women's Network TV (1999)

  • His next feature in a TV documentary series of "Age of E " by Sleeping Giant Productions is to be broadcast in the year of 2000 in Canada, USA, UK, Australia, New Zealand and South America.

  • Honorary guest lecturer at Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College
    in Ontario; Lecture and workshop of clinical Japanese acupuncture and moxibustion to professional chiropractors and post-graduate students (2016)

*** Contributed numerous articles on acupuncture and oriental medicine to journals, magazines and newspapers both in Japanese and English

*** Translated an English book of "How to Select and Use an Executive Search Firm" by Robert Taylor (McGraw-Hill Publication) into Japanese, published in Japan (1993)
